Classes for all levels are held during the mornings, Monday to Saday, at various venues either at the College or in the area surrounding University College. The classes will run from 9.00am to 12noon with a break for morning tea. Please ensure that you are physically fit to participate in your chosen class.
If you are coming for the first time, it is helpful to seek advice from your local teacher. You will find the class more enjoyable and be more comfortable if you choose a class which is appropriate for your standard and knowledge of Scottish Country dancing.
Please read the following descriptions carefully and, if necessary, discuss them with your teacher. Please be aware of the difference between the ability to learn dances and the ability to dance well. The latter requires excellent steps, perfect phrasing, excellent giving of hands, awareness of covering and overall sense of poise and balance.
DANCE CLASS GUIDELINES
Advanced Challenge Class
Suitable for dancers capable of dancing all steps and formations with excellent phrasing, use of hands and covering whilst sustaining a high level of performance. Dancers will be expected to meet the challenge of a physically demanding class.
Advanced Class
Class designed for those who do not have the energy for the above class but can consistently execute all steps and formations to a high standard showing good phrasing, use of hands and covering and who can sustain this level of performance, independently.
Intermediate Class
This class will develop steps and formations. It will focus on all aspects of technique, footwork, handing, phrasing, transitions and teamwork. Some dances from the evening programs may be taught.
Advanced Low Impact Class
Class suitable for dancers who have achieved a high level of dancing who now wish for a low impact class with less emphasis on footwork, focusing on sociability and overall execution of dances.
Low Impact Social Class
For those who can perform all steps and formations but are no longer able to sustain the challenge of a 3 hour morning class. This class will run for 2 hours with the focus on the sociability and enjoyment of dancing interesting dances.
Rest and Be Thankful
For those dancers who do not wish to attend morning classes but are keen to participate in other social activities.
Non-Dancer
For non dancing partners and those where classes are no longer an option but who like to enjoy the music and catch up with dancing friends. Excludes dancing at classes and socials.
NB: The WS Committee will consider your choice and endeavour to place you in your class of preference, but reserve the right to allocate you to a class that is thought more appropriate for you and for others.
BASIC TEACHING SKILLS COURSE
In addition to the dancing classes, the Australian Teachers' Alliance (ATA) is offering a Basic Teaching Skills Course for those currently teaching classes or intending to teach classes but who lack RSCDS qualifications. This course would be an alternative to the morning dancing classes but participants would still be able to join in all other Winter School activities.
